Description of key information

Depending on local conditions and existing concentrations, disturbances in the biodegradation process of activated sludge are possible.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

The respiration inhibition induced by 3-methyl-2-butenal in domestic activated sludge was investigated in a guideline study according to OECD 209. After an inoculation time of 30 minutes the test was terminated and an EC20 of ca. 35 mg/l (EC50>1000 mg/l) was determined. A test on industrial activated sludge performed in compliance with EU Directive 88/302/EEC, C.11 detected an EC20 > 1000 mg/l.

Two tests on the growth inhibition in Pseudomonas putida induced by the substance were performed according to DIN 38412 part 8 and detected an EC50 of 212 mg/l and 178 mg/l respectively after 17 hours of incubation.
