Preliminary Test

The test item could be ignite using a flame (min 1000 °C) as ignition source but if the flame was removed, the flame went out. The test applied for at least 2 minutes.

In the preliminary test the test item burned not over the complete distance. Thus, the performance of the main test was not necessary.

The test item zinc 5-nitroisophthalate could not be burned in the preliminary test over the complete distance applying a flame (min. 1000 °C) as ignition source for at least 2 minutes.

The test item has not to be classified as a highly flammable solid nor as a readily combustible solid in class 4.1 according to the UN Transport Regulation. Likewise, classification as a flammable solid is not required according to GHS / CLP Regulation EC 1272/2008 Annex 1, Section 2.7.

Flammability in contact with water

The study does not need to be conducted because the experience in production or handling shows that the substance does not react with water. The substance does not contain groups that might lead to a reaction with water or damp air, leading to the development of dangerous amounts of gas or gases which may be highly flammable. Furthermore, long-term industrial experience in practical handling of the substance shows that it does not react with water and in a transformation/dissolution test the test item did not emit flammable gases.

Pyrophoric properties

The study does not need to be conducted because the substance is known to be stable in contact with air at room temperature for prolonged periods of time (days) and hence, the classification procedure does not need to be applied. This substance does not contain any chemical groups that might lead to spontaneous ignition a short time after coming in contact with air at room temperature (circa 20 °C). The ionic and anionic compounds of zinc 5-nitroisophtalate are present in stable oxidation states. Furthermore, long-term industrial experience in handling shows that the substance does not ignite in contact with air.

Justification for classification or non-classification

The test item does not have to be classified as flammable substance. Hence, C&L is not required in accordance with the UN Transport Regulation and GHS and Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 (CLP Regulation).
