Description of key information

Appearance / physical state / colour:

The appearance of 2-methylanisole was observed as, it is a colorless organic liquid compound.

Melting point/ Freezing point:

Freezing point of 2-Methylanisole (578-58-5) was determined to be  less than -12.8 degree celcius.

Boiling point:

The mean boiling point of 2-methylanisole (CAS No. 578-58-5) was determined as 171.3°C at 966.4 hPa.

Density:

The mean density of 2-methylanisole (CAS No. 578-58-5) was found to be 0.9754 g/cm³ at 20°C and 969 hPa.

Particle size distribution (Granulometry):

In accordance with column 2 of Annex VII of the REAcH regulation this end point was considered for waiver since the chemical 2-methylanisole is a liquid and is expected to be marketed or used in a non solid or granular form.

Vapour pressure:

The vapour pressure of 2-methylanisole was estimated to be 199.983548 Pa at 25°C.

Partition coefficient:

The partition coefficient (n-octanol/water) of test substance 2-Methylanisole (578-58-5) was determined as per the HPLC method (OECD Guideline-117). The Log Pow value was determined to be 3.000 ± 0.001 dimensionless at 25°C.

Water solubility:

The water solubility for the test item 2-methylanisole was found to be 249.96 mg/L at 25°C.

Surface tension:

The surface tension for chemical 2-methylanisole was predicted to be 29.2 ± 3.0 dyne/cm.

Flash point:

The mean flash point of 2-methylanisole(CAS No. 578-58-5) was 51.3°C at 966.86 hPa.

Autoflammability:

2-methylanisole did not catch fire on being exposed to air at room temperature of 27°C pressure of 966 hPa. This indicates that  2-methylanisole is not auto-flammable.

Flammability:

The study does not need to be conducted because the substance 2-methylanisole is a flammable liquid in catagory 3 having a reported flash point of 52 degree C.Therefore it is not recommended to conduct testing for  flammability. Thus, this end point was considered for waiver.

Explosiveness:

The study does not need to be conducted because there are no chemical groups present in the molecule which are associated with explosive properties.

Oxidising properties:

The study does not need to be conducted because there are no chemical groups present in the molecule which are associated with oxidizing properties and hence the classification procedure does not need to be applied.

pH:

The pH of 1% w/v solution of the test item 2-methylanisole (CAS No 578-58-5) was 4.69 at 24.56 °C.

Viscosity:

Kinematic viscosity (experimental) of 2-methylanisole (CAS No. 578-58-5) at 20°C and 40°C was found to be 14.6784 mm²/secand 12.6720 mm²/s, respectively.

Dynamic viscosity (calculated) of 2-methylanisole (CAS No. 578-58-5) at 20°C and 40°C was found to be 14.3173 mPa.S and 12.3602 mPa.S, respectively.

Based on available data from obtained report, the appearance of 2-methylanisole was observed as, it is a colorless organic liquid compound.

Other supporting studies from handbook and authoritative databases, also observed the appearance of 2-methylanisole as, a colorless organic liquid compound.

Melting point/ Freezing point:

Based on Experimental study report,Freezing point of 2-Methylanisole (578-58-5) was determined to be  less than -12.8 degree celcius.

Based on available data from handbook and authoritative databases, the freezing point of 2-methylanisole was determined to be -34.1°C

Boiling point:

The boiling point determination of Test item 2-methylanisole (CAS No. 578-58-5 ) was done as per the test guideline OECD 103. The method followed was according to Siwoloboff. The mean boiling point was determined to be 171.3°C at 966.4 hPa.

Other supporting studies from handbooks and various authoritative databases also supported the selected key study and showing the boiling point as 171 °C, 170 -172 °C and 172 °C respectively, all the values are is in the range of selected key value.

Another supporting studies from authoritative databases, supported the boiling point of 2-methylanisole as 170 -172 °C, much closer to the selected key value.

One more supporting studies from other handbook and authoritative database, exhibited the the boiling point of 2-methylanisole at 172 °C, this value also much closed to the selected key value.

Density:

The density of Test item 2-methylanisole (CAS No. 578-58-5 ) was determined following OECD guideline 109 and according to the Indian standard method for determination of density of liquids [IS 4730:1994 (Reaffirmed 2010)]. The mean density of the test item was found to be 0.9754 g/cm³ at 20°C and 969 hPa.

Other supporting studies determined the density of 2-methylanisole as follows,

Based on available data from handbook, the density of 2-methylanisole was determined to be 0.985 g/cm3 at 25 °C.

Other supporting studies from handbooks and authoritative databases exhibited the density of 2-methylanisole as followed,

Gestis = 0.98 g/cm3 at 20 °C,

Handbook = 0.9853 g/cm3 at 15.5 °C,

Scifinder = 0.9798 g/cm3,

Review article = 0.983 -0.986 g/cm3 at 15.5 °C.

All these obtained values supported the selected key value very strongly.

Based on the key study from study report,the partition Coefficient n-octanol/water of test chmeical2-Methylanisole (578-58-5)was determined by the Reverse Phase High Performance Liquid Chromatographic method according to OECD Guideline No. 117 for testing of Chemicals. The reference substances were chosen according to estimated Pow range of the test substance and generalized calibration graph was prepared.The reference substances were having Pow value ranging from1.3 to 4.6.The Log Pow value was determined to be3.000 ± 0.001dimensionless at 25°C.This value indicates that the substance2-Methylanisole (578-58-5)is hydrophilic in nature.

In a supporting study from authoritative & modelling database and secondary source,the octanol water partition coefficent (log Pow) of chemical 2-methylanisole (CAS no. 578 -58 -5) was estimated to be 2.74 at temparature 25°C

By this log Pow value chemical 2-methylanisole is considered as hydrophilic in nature.

Thus, based on the available information, the log Pow value of the test chemical was determined to be range from 2.74to 3.000. On the basis of this value, test chemical can be considered to be hydrophilic in nature.

Water solubility:

The water solubility determination of test item 2-methylanisole (CAS No. 578-58-5) was done as per the OECD guideline 105 by spectrophotometric analytical method as per OECD 101. The solubility of (2-methylanisole of 578-58-5) in water was found to be 249.96 mg/L at 25°C.

Other supporting data from handbook and authoritative databases, estimated the water solubility of 2-methylanisole as 450 mg/L at 25 °C.

The estimated value also supported the selected key value.

Hence on the basis of experimental value and estimated value the substance 2-methylanisole was considered to be moderately soluble in water.

Surface tension:

Based on the prediction done by ACD labs Software (v12.1.0.50375), the surface tension for chemical 2-methylanisole was predicted to be 29.2 ± 3.0 dyne/cm.

Flash point:

The flash point determination of 2-methylanisole (CAS No. 578-58-5)was done following closed cup method using Abel's flash point apparatus. The test was conducted in replicates and mean flash point was found to be 51.3°C at 966.86hPa.

Other supporting data from authoritative database Gestis, also determined the flash point of 2-methylanisole as 52 °C by closed cup method, obtained value strongly supported the selected key value.

Autoflammability:

2-methylanisole did not catch fire on being exposed to air at room temperature of 27°C pressure of 966 hPa. This indicates that  2-methylanisole is not auto-flammable.

The viscosity determination of Test item 2-methylanisole (CAS No. 578-58-5) was done as per the test guideline OECD 114 using Redwood Viscometer No. 1. Kinematic viscosity (experimental) of Test item at 20°C and 40°C is 14.6784 mm²/sec and 12.6720 mm²/s, respectively. Dynamic viscosity (calculated) of Test item at 20°C and 40°C was found to be 14.3173 mPa.S and 12.3602 mPa.S, respectively.
