Description of key information

The melting point of butenes ranges from -105.52°C to -185.34°C. This range was derived from the members of the butenes category: but-1-ene (CAS 106-9-9), 2-butene (CAS 107-01-7) and 2-methylpropene (CAS 115-11-7).

The data reported are derived from the members of the butenes category and were obtained from the CRC Handbook (Lide 2008). This handbook is peer-reviewed and is considered reliable and suitable for use as a key study for this endpoint. The melting point of the butenes category therefore ranges from -105.52°C to -185.34°C. The data are supported by results from the Merck Handbook (O’Neil 2006), which is a peer reviewed handbook with results of -190°C for but-1-ene and -139.3°C to -105.8°C for but-2-ene.

The melting point of 2-methylpropene is -140.7°C (Lide 2008). The melting point of 2-butene ranges from -138.88°C (cis) to -105.52°C (trans) (Lide 2008). The melting point of but-1-ene is -185°C (Lide 2008). The mean of the melting point values for the butenes is -142.5°C and this has been used to complete the 'key value for chemical safety assessment'.
