Registration Dossier

Data platform availability banner - registered substances factsheets

Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

First-aid measures

General advice:

First aid personnel should pay attention to their own safety. If the patient is likely to become

unconscious, place and transport in stable sideways position (recovery position). Remove

contaminated clothing. Immediately remove contaminated clothing.

If inhaled:

Keep patient calm, remove to fresh air, seek medical attention. Immediately inhale corticosteroid dose

aerosol.

On skin contact:

Wash thoroughly with soap and water. Immediately wash thoroughly with plenty of water, apply sterile

dressings, consult a skin specialist.

On contact with eyes:

Wash affected eyes for at least 15 minutes under running water with eyelids held open. Immediately

wash affected eyes for at least 15 minutes under running water with eyelids held open, consult an eye

specialist.

On ingestion:

Immediately rinse mouth and then drink 200-300 ml of water, seek medical attention.

Note to physician:

Treatment: Treat according to symptoms (decontamination, vital functions), no known specific

antidote.

Fire-fighting measures

Suitable extinguishing media:

dry extinguishing media, carbon dioxide, foam

Unsuitable extinguishing media for safety reasons:

water

Specific hazards:

hydrogen chloride, carbonyl chloride, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide

The substances/groups of substances mentioned can be released in case of fire.

Special protective equipment:

Wear self-contained breathing apparatus and chemical-protective clothing.

Further information:

Sealed containers should be protected against heat as this results in pressure build-up. Cool

endangered containers with water-spray. Fire debris must be disposed of in accordance with offical

regulations.

Accidental release measures

Personal precautions:

Breathing protection required. Avoid contact with the skin, eyes and clothing.

Environmental precautions:

Do not empty into drains.

Methods for cleaning up or taking up:

For small amounts: Contain with absorbent material (e.g. sand, silica gel, acid binder, general purpose

binder, sawdust).

For large amounts: Pump off product.

Cleaning operations should be carried out only while wearing breathing apparatus. Clean

contaminated floors and objects thoroughly with water and detergents, observing environmental

regulations. Collect waste in suitable containers, which can be labeled and sealed. Incinerate or take

to a special waste disposal site in accordance with local authority regulations.

Additional information: Reacts violently with water.

Handling and storage

Handling

Ensure thorough ventilation of stores and work areas. Provide good room ventilation even at ground

level (vapours are heavier than air). Product should be worked up in closed equipment as far as

possible.

Protection against fire and explosion:

Vapours are heavier than air. Vapours may form explosive mixture with air. Prevent electrostatic

charge - sources of ignition should be kept well clear - fire extinguishers should be kept handy. Empty

containers may contain flammable residue.

Storage

Segregate from foods and animal feeds.

Further information on storage conditions: Keep container tightly closed in a cool, well-ventilated

place. Avoid all sources of ignition: heat, sparks, open flame.

Storage stability:

Storage temperature: 20 °C

Storage duration: 6 Months

Exposure controls / personal protection

Components with workplace control parameters

79-03-8: propionyl chloride

Personal protective equipment

Respiratory protection:

Wear respiratory protection if ventilation is inadequate. Self-contained breathing apparatus.

Eye protection:

Tightly fitting safety goggles (cage goggles) (e.g. EN 166) and face shield.

Body protection:

Body protection must be chosen depending on activity and possible exposure, e.g. apron, protecting

boots, chemical-protection suit (according to EN 14605 in case of splashes or EN ISO 13982 in case of

dust).

General safety and hygiene measures:

Handle in accordance with good industrial hygiene and safety practice. Avoid contact with the skin,

eyes and clothing. Do not breathe vapour/spray. Keep away from food, drink and animal feeding stuffs.

Store work clothing separately. Take off immediately all contaminated clothing.

Stability and reactivity

Conditions to avoid:

Avoid all sources of ignition: heat, sparks, open flame.

Substances to avoid:

alkali or alkaline-earth metal, metal powder, oxidizing agents

Hazardous reactions:

Reacts with water. Reacts with alkalies. Reacts with alcohols. Reacts with amines. Exothermic

reaction. Explosion hazard.

Hazardous decomposition products:

hydrogen chloride, carbonyl chloride

Disposal considerations

Incinerate in suitable incineration plant, observing local authority regulations.

Contaminated packaging:

Uncleaned empties should be disposed of in the same manner as the contents.
