Lead tetroxide does not require classification for explosiveness.
The experimental determination of the explosivity of a compound is not
required, if available thermodynamic data (reaction enthalpies) and/or
the absence of certain reactive groups (Bretherick, 1990) in the
structural formula indicate that the substance will not decompose
violently under formation of gases or release of energy and thus does
not pose a risk for explosivity.
The substance lead tetroxide (“minium”) is considered to be “inert” in
the context of explosivity, since it already represents lead in an
elevated oxidation status. Finally, it is noted that despite the
long-term use of lead tetroxide, this substance is not classified for
explosive properties according to UN transport regulations.
The study is therefore waived in
accordance with REACH Annex VII, Section 7.11, Column 2.
