Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.
The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

PBT assessment
Administrative data
PBT assessment: overall result
- Name:
- Methylphosphonic Acid
- Type of composition:
- legal entity composition of the substance
- State / form:
- liquid
- >= 97 - <= 99.1 % (w/w)
- Reference substance:
- Methylphosphonic Acid
- Reference substance:
- Methylphosphonic Acid
- This impurity is considered relevant for the classification and labelling of the substance
- Reference substance:
- Methylphosphonic Acid
- This impurity is considered relevant for the classification and labelling of the substance
- Reference substance:
- Methylphosphonic Acid
- This impurity is considered relevant for the classification and labelling of the substance
- PBT status:
- the substance is not PBT / vPvB
- Justification:
Data were mainly retrieved from studies with read across substance "methylphosphonic acid, compound with amidinourea (1:1)" (MPAAU), EC# 282-758-4, CAS# 84402-58-4 representing the neutralized salt form of MPA that is supplied to the market. Due to lack of inherent biodegradability in a valid Zahn-Wellens-Test the substance shall be considered as persistent for the PBT discussion. Screening assignment "not (v)B" shall be applied based on log Kow of -1.5559. Based on evidence retrieved from studies with the read across substance MPAAU, the registered substance is not classified as CMR and not classified according to its repeated dose toxicity. Available long-term and short-term aquatic studies with all three trophic levels revealed effect levels well above the trigger values. Based on these results the substance shall be considered as "not T".
- Likely routes of exposure:
Due to the high corrosivity of the chemical skin contact, eye contact, inhalation as well as other routes of incorporation during production and handling of the chemical has to be strictly avoided. Since the chemical is either directly transferred into another substance (neutralisation with amidinourea) or used as a monomer in a polymerization reaction no further exposure is expected during the entire lifecycle of the chemical.
