First-aid measures

General information:

Take persons to a safe place. Observe self-protection for first aid. In the event of allergic reactions, particularly those affecting the respiratory system, seek immediate medical advice. Pregnant women exposed to this substance must seek medical advice.

After contact with the eyes:

Rinse immediately with plenty of water for 10-15 minutes. Keep eyelids well open to rinse the whole eye surface and eyelids with water. Seek medical advice and clearly identify substance.

After contact with the skin:

Remove contaminated or soaked clothing. Wash off with plenty of water or water and soap immediately for 10-15 minutes. In serious cases, use emergency shower immediately. Seek medical advice and clearly identify substance.

After inhalation:

Keep the patient calm. If unconscious place in stable sideways position. Protect against loss of body heat. If breathing stops, administer artificial respiration. Seek medical advice and clearly identify substance.

After swallowing:

If conscious, give several small portions of water to drink. Do not induce vomiting. Seek medical advice and clearly identify substance.

Indication of any immediate medical attention and special treatment needed

Product can lead to sensitisation and can trigger allergies. After inhalation: treat as early as possible using cortisone spray. Product contains reproductive toxins (may cause harm to the unborn child and /or impairs male or female reproductive function). After exposure, specialist advice (e.g. gynaecology/birth aid or, if necessary, toxicology/human genetics) is recommended.

Fire-fighting measures

Extinguishing media:

Suitable extinguishing media: water spray , extinguishing powder , foam , carbon dioxide.

Extinguishing media which must not be used for safety reasons: water.

Special hazards arising from the substance or mixture: Hazardous combustion products: hydrogen chloride .

Advice for firefighters

Special protective equipment for fire fighting:

Use respiratory protection independent of recirculated air.

Accidental release measures

Personal precautions, protective equipment and emergency procedures

Wear personal protection equipment (see section 8). Avoid inhaling mists and vapours. Avoid contact with eyes and skin.

Environmental precautions

Prevent material from entering sewers or surface waters. Contain any fluid that runs out using suitable material (e.g. earth).

Methods and material for containment and cleaning up

Do not flush away with water. Absorb with a liquid binding material such as diatomaceous earth and dispose of according to local/state/federal regulations. For small amounts: Cover with calcium oxide. Contain larger amounts and pump up into suitable containers.

Further information:

Eliminate all sources of ignition.

Handling and storage

Precautions for safe handling:

Ensure adequate ventilation. Must be syphoned off in situ.

Precautions against fire and explosion:

Cool endangered containers with water. Flammable vapors may accumulate and form explosive mixtures with air in containers, process vessels, including partial, empty and uncleaned containers and vessels, or other enclosed spaces. Keep away from open flames, heat and sparks. Take precautionary measures against electrostatic charging.

Conditions for safe storage, including any incompatibilities

Conditions for storage rooms and vessels:

Do not store in containers made of aluminum or other light metals.

Advice for storage of incompatible materials: none known .

Further information for storage: Keep container tightly closed.

Exposure controls / personal protection

Control parameters

Maximum airborne concentrations at the workplace:

Substance                            Type       mg/m3              ppm

Toluene                                      EU               192,0              50,0

Aerosol – inhalable fraction                10,0

Toluene: STEL (EU) is 384 mg/m3 (=100 ppm), can be absorbed through the skin.

The aerosol limit specified is a recommendation should aerosol be formed during processing.

Exposure in the work place limited and controlled

General protection and hygiene measures:

Avoid exposure. Remove contaminated, soaked clothing immediately. Do not eat, drink or smoke when handling. Wash hands at the end of work and before eating. Keep away from foodstuff, drink and feedingstuff. Keep working clothes separately. Provide emergency shower and eye-bath.

Personal protection equipment:

Respiratory protection

If handled uncovered, use respiratory protective equipment. Respirator with a full face mask, according to acknowledged standards such as EN 136.

Recommended Filter type: Combined filter type ABEK-P2 (certain inorganic, organic and acidic gases and vapors; ammonia/amines; particles), according to acknowledged standards such as EN 14387

In case of long or strong exposure: positive pressure self contained breathing apparatus

Eye protection

tight fitting protective goggles . In case of long or strong exposure: look to respiratory protection .

Hand protection

Recommended glove types: Protective gloves made of butyl rubber

thickness of the material: 0,5 mm

Protective gloves are required at all times when handling the material, according to recognized standards such as EN374. Because of the product properties, gloves are generally only suitable for protection against splashes. Due to the substance‘s properties, contaminated gloves must be immediately decontaminated and changed.

Please observe the instructions regarding permeability and breakthrough time which are provided by the supplier of the gloves. Also take into consideration the specific local conditions under which the product is used, such as the danger of cuts, abrasion, and the contact time. Note that, due to the numerous external influences (such as temperature), a chemically resistant protective glove in daily use may have a service life that is considerably shorter than the measured break through time.

Skin protection

full protective suit liquid-tight required . Please observe the instructions regarding permeability time which are provided by the supplier.

Exposure to the environment limited and controlled

Prevent material from entering surface waters, drains or sewers and soil.

Stability and reactivity

General information: If stored and handled in accordance with standard industrial practices no hazardous reactions are known.

Conditions to avoid: none known.

Incompatible materials: Reacts with: alkalis . The reaction takes place with the formation of heat.

Hazardous decomposition products: none known.

Disposal considerations

Material

Recommendation: Dispose of according to regulations by incineration in a special waste incinerator. Observe local/state/federal regulations.

Uncleaned packaging

Recommendation: Completely discharge containers (no tear drops, no powder rest, scraped carefully). Containers may be recycled or re-used. Observe local/state/federal regulations.
