Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.
The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information
Additional information
The biodegradability of a substance depends on the structure of the molecule. Under aerobic conditions, ester groups part of a chemical structure are easily hydrolyzed and opened up during biodegradation. Therefore the presence of ester groups in a molecular structure contributes to a high biodegradability of the substance. By the hydrolysis, the ester group transforms into alcohols of the alkyl-side chains. The biodegradability of the alkyl-side chain decreases by the length of the alkyl chain. Substances with similar structures will therefore be biodegradable to the same degree.
The structure of L-TME consists of an ester group with an alkyl-side chain of methyl in addition to an amino group. The structure of L-TME is similar to the structure of L-TEE except that L-TME contains a methyl alkyl-side group and L-TEE an ethyl alkyl-side group.
In test for readily biodegradation (OECD 301), the substance L-TEE was passing the criteria for being readily biodegradable with a biodegradation of 97% of the ThOD after 28 days. Due to the structure similarity of L-TEE and L-TME, and the fact that L-TME has a shorter side-alkyl chain (methyl) than L-TEE (ethyl), the biodegradability of L-TME is expected to be at least the same as that of L-TEE. Thus, L-TME is considered to be readily biodegradable.
