First-aid measures
- General advice:
In the event of an overwhelming exposure to this product through ingestion, inhalation, or dermal exposure, primary treatment should be directed at the primary toxicity of this compound.
Indication of immediate medical attention and special treatment needed.
Show this safety data sheet to the medical provider in attendance. Nitriles may be partially
metabolized to cyanide in the body. Symptoms such as rapid respiration, gasping, rapid pulse,
headache, weakness, drop in blood pressure, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, flushing, drowsiness
and redness of eyes may occur. Convulsions, loss of consciousness and death may occur in gross
over-exposures. In severe poisonings where the patient is incoherent or unconscious, treatment
for cyanide exposure may be indicated.
- Following inhalation:
Move to fresh air. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen. If the affected person is not breathing, apply
artificial respiration. Induce artificial respiration with the aid of a pocket mask equipped with a
one-way valve or other proper respiratory medical device. Get medical attention immediately.
- Following skin contact:
In case of contact, immediately flush skin with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes while
removing contaminated clothing and shoes. For minor skin contact, avoid spreading material on
unaffected skin. Call a physician or poison control center immediately.
- Following eye contact:
Rinse immediately with plenty of water, also under the eyelids, for at least 15 minutes. Remove
contact lenses, if present and easy to do. Continue rinsing. Call a physician or poison control
center immediately
- Following ingestion:
If swallowed, do NOT induce vomiting. If vomiting occurs naturally, have victim lean forward to
reduce risk of aspiration. Never give anything by mouth to a victim who is unconscious or is having
convulsions. Induce artificial respiration with the aid of a pocket mask equipped with a one-way
valve or other proper respiratory medical device. Call a physician or Poison Control Center
immediately.
- Most important symptoms and effects:
Eyes: Causes serious eye damage. Symptoms may include discomfort or pain, excess blinking and tear production, with marked redness and swelling of the conjunctiva.
Skin: Corrosive effects. May cause allergic skin reaction. Symptoms may include redness, edema, drying, defatting and cracking of the skin.
Inhalation: Fatal if inhaled. May cause allergic respiratory reaction. Inhalation of vapors/fumes causes respiratory irritation with throat discomfort, coughing or difficulty breathing.
Ingestion: Fatal if swallowed. Aspiration into lungs may cause chemical pneumonia and lung damage. Ingestion of this product may cause nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.
Treat symptomatically. Note: This product contains nitrile compounds which may be partially metabolized to cyanide in the body.
Fire-fighting measures
- Suitable extinguishing media:
Dry chemical, CO2, water spray or regular foam.
- Unsuitable extinguishing media:
Do not use water jet as an extinguisher, as this will spread the fire.
- Special hazards arising from the substance or mixture:
Vapors may form explosive mixtures with air. Vapors may travel considerable distance to a source
of ignition and flash back. During fire, gases hazardous to health may be formed. Decomposition of this product may emit oxides of nitrogen and carbon monoxide.
- Advice for fire fighter: Wear full protective clothing, including helmet, self-contained positive pressure or pressure
demand breathing apparatus, protective clothing and face mask. Structural firefighters protective
clothing will only provide limited protection.
- Fire fighting equipment/instructions: In case of fire and/or explosion do not breathe fumes. Move containers from fire area if you can do
it without risk. In the event of fire, cool tanks with water spray. Withdraw immediately in case of
rising sound from venting safety devices or any discoloration of tanks due to fire. Water runoff can
cause environmental damage.
- Specific methods: Use standard firefighting procedures and consider the hazards of other involved materials. Collect
contaminated fire extinguishing water separately. This must not be discharged into drains.
- General fire hazards: Keep away from heat, sparks, and flame. Highly flammable liquid and vapor. Irritating and toxic
gases or fumes may be released during a fire.
Accidental release measures
- Personal precautions:
Immediately evacuate personnel to safe areas. Keep unnecessary personnel away. Eliminate all
ignition sources (no smoking, flares, sparks, or flames in immediate area). Do not touch damaged
containers or spilled material unless wearing appropriate protective clothing. Do not breathe mist
or vapor. Ventilate closed spaces before entering them. Local authorities should be advised if
significant spillages cannot be contained. For personal protection, see below.
- Appropriate engineering controls:
Explosion-proof general and local exhaust ventilation. Eye wash facilities and emergency shower
must be available when handling this product.
- Individual protection measures, such as personal protective equipment - see below
- Eye/face protection: Wear safety glasses with side shields (or goggles) and a face shield.
- Skin protection: Hand protection Wear appropriate chemical resistant gloves.
- Other: Wear appropriate chemical resistant clothing. Impervious gloves should be used at all times when
handling this product.
- Respiratory protection: When workers are facing concentrations above the exposure limit, they must use appropriate
certified respirators. Wear positive pressure self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA).
- Thermal hazards: Wear appropriate thermal protective clothing, when necessary.
- General hygiene considerations:
When using, do not eat, drink or smoke. Do not get this material on clothing. Always observe good
personal hygiene measures, such as washing after handling the material and before eating,
drinking, and/or smoking. Routinely wash work clothing and protective equipment to remove
contaminants. Contaminated work clothing should not be allowed out of the workplace.
- Environmental precautions:
Avoid release to the environment. Contact local authorities in case of spillage to drain/aquatic
environment. Prevent further leakage or spillage if safe to do so. Do not contaminate water. Avoid
discharge into drains, water courses or onto the ground.
- Methods and material for containment and cleaning up:
Eliminate all ignition sources (no smoking, flares, sparks, or flames in immediate area). Take
precautionary measures against static discharge. Use only non-sparking tools. Prevent entry into
waterways, sewers, basements or confined areas.
Large Spills: Stop the flow of material, if this is without risk. Dike the spilled material, where this is
possible. Use a non-combustible material like vermiculite, sand or earth to soak up the product
and place into a container for later disposal. Clean contaminated surface thoroughly.
Small Spills: Wipe up with absorbent material (e.g. cloth, fleece). Clean surface thoroughly to
remove residual contamination.
Never return spills to original containers for re-use.
Handling and storage
- Precautions for safe handling:
Obtain special instructions before use. Do not handle until all safety precautions have been read and understood. Vapors may form explosive mixtures with air. Do not handle, store or open near an open flame, sources of heat or sources of ignition. Protect material from direct sunlight. Take precautionary measures against static discharges. All equipment used when handling the product must be grounded. Use non-sparking tools and explosion-proof equipment. Avoid prolonged
exposure. Observe good industrial hygiene practices. When using, do not eat, drink or smoke.
Wash thoroughly after handling. Wash contaminated clothing before reuse. Handle and open
container with care. Avoid release to the environment. Do not empty into drains.
- Conditions for safe storage, including any incompatibilities:
Keep away from heat, sparks, and flame. Keep in a well-ventilated place. Prevent electrostatic
charge build-up by using common bonding and grounding techniques. Store in a well-ventilated
place. Keep in an area equipped with sprinklers. Store away from incompatible materials

Stability and reactivity
1. Reactivity
: The product is stable and non-reactive under normal conditions of use, storage and transport.
2. Chemical stability
: Material is stable under normal conditions.
3. Possibility of hazardous reactions
: Hazardous polymerization may occur in the presence of incompatible materials.
4. Conditions to avoid
: Avoid temperatures exceeding the decomposition temperature. Heat, flames and sparks.
5. Incompatible materials
: Strong acids, alkalies and oxidizing agents.
6. Hazardous decomposition products: If product is burned hazardous gases such as oxides of nickel, carbon and nitrogen and various hydrocarbons may be produced. Traces of hydrogen cyanide may be found in fire conditions.
