Description of key information
In accordance with column 2 of REACH Annex VII (point 7.6.) the study does not need to be conducted if the water solubility is below 1 mg/L at 20°C.
Expert statement concerning of infeasibility of the water solubility test was made (see bellow).
With regard to the nature and chemical composition of the substance the test for water solubility (EU A.16) could not be performed.

Reasons for not performing the study were following.
Determination of the water solubility is based on a preparation of a saturated solution of the test substance in water and a consequent determination of a concentration of the test substance in water reached. From the chemical point of view it is obvious that all main components of the test substance are water insoluble (the test substance is complex mixture of hundred aliphatic, naphthenic, phenolic, aromatic, heteroaromatic and cyclic-aromatic hydrocarbons). There are hydrophile fenols in this mixture. Some components with their sum content is maximally 10 % are water-soluble, others are only slightly soluble.
Dissolving of the test substance in water would lead to a water extract of water-soluble components only. The concentration of extracted compounds would depend on an amount of the test substance being dissolved (the solubilities of individual components influence one each other). The final extract would contain only those substances that the test substance contains in minority so that the concentration profile of the extract would not represent the solubility of the test substance as a whole. Moreover no analytical method is available for determination of concentration of water-soluble components in water extract.
Nevertheless the preliminary test was performed. The sample was intensive shaked with increasing volumes of distilled water. The process always resulted in light brown emulsion with dark undissolved part of the test substance on the top.
