Short-term toxicity to fish:
The acute toxicity of diammonium phosphate was examined in an static 96 -hour assay using fry and fingerlings of Cirrhinus mrigala/Labeo rohita at four different water temperatures. The toxicity increased wit increasing water temperature.
The reported LC50 values for diammonium phosphate at 21°C are 1700 mg/l for fry and 1875 mg/l for fingerlings respectively.
The reported study has Klimisch score 2 and was conducted after "Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater" (American Public Health Association). The LC50 for fry was selected since life stage phases are more sensitive than fish. Short-term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates:In a 72 hour acute toxicity test, Daphnia carinata were exposed to superphosphate at two different room temperatures. The LC50 values were estimated as:
LC50 (22.7°C): 1790 mg/l
LC50 (30.8°C): 1825 mg/l
The reported study has Klimisch score 2 and was conducted after the methods described by American Public Health Association (APHA) 1975.
Toxicity to aquatic algae:
In a 72h algal growth inhibition study according to GLP and OECD guideline 201, exposure of algae (Pseudokirchnerella subcapitata ) did not cause any adverse effects. The NOEC (toxicity) was estimated to be 97.1 mg DAP/L (no inhibition of algal growth observed in study) The NOEC for stimulation was established to be 3.57 mg DAP/L. No adverse inhibitory effects were observed. There was some growth stimulation at 6.25 mg/L and above. This was consistent with the known stimulatory effect of phosphate compounds. The reported NOEC reflects this stimulatory response and is not considered to be an adverse effect.
Toxicity to microorganism:
The influence of Diammonium hydrogenorthophosphate on the respiration rate of activated sludge was investigated after a contact time of 3 hours according to OECD guideline 209.Under the conditions of the test, Diammonium hydrogenorthophosphate was not toxic to waste water (activated sludge) bacteria at 100 mg/l. The 3-hour EC50 of Diammonium hydrogenorthophosphate exceeded 100 mg/l (based on nominal concentrations). The reorted study is GLP-compliant and has Klimisch score 1.
