- Executive summary:
The melting point determination was carried out by the pour point method, using a procedure designed to be compatible with Method 102 of the OECD Guidelines for Testing of Chemicals, 27 July 1995.
The sample from the preliminary test was heated to 46 °C in a water bath set at 48 °C before being allowed to cool in air. At 35 °C the sample was transferred to an ice/water bath maintained at -1 to 2 °C. At 10 °C the sample was transferred to a dry ice/acetone bath maintained at -18 to -15 °C. At -7 °C the sample was transferred to a dry ice/acetone bath maintained at -35 to -32 °C.
Starting at 3 °C and at intervals of 3 °C, the sample was tilted to a horizontal position for a period of 5 seconds during which time the sample was observed for signs of flow. The sample was continued to be observed until the test item was no longer mobile. The determination was carried out in duplicate.The pour point of the test item has been determined to be -6 ± 3 °C (267 ± 3 K). The presence of up to 10% absorbed moisture in the test item will have affected the test result as the test item would have been a solid if it contained no absorbed moisture. Considering the Boiling Point test data, no melting point was evident in Determination 6 when the absorbed moisture had been driven off. Therefore, the test item may not have a definitive melting point but instead decomposes.
