Description of key information
The phototoxic potential of hexylcinnamaldehyde is investigated in two studies.
Guinea pig = phototoxic at 3% and 10% alcoholic preparation with a skin penetration enhancer
Human volunteers = Non phototoxic at 10% alcoholic preparation.
Additional information
Both studies are similar in their reliability, but the animal study used in addition a skin penetration enhancer. It is considered that the human data should take precedence in this case over the animal data and therefore conclude that hexylcinnamaldehyde does not have phototoxicity potential in humans.
