Additional information
The ready biodegradability of the test item was determined in the modified Sturm test with non-adapted activated sludge over a testing period of 28 days. The test item was tested at nominal concentrations of 10 mg/L and 20 mg/L test item. In addition, a positive control with benzoic acid and an inoculum blank were run in parallel to the test item treatment groups. All samples were run in duplicates.
The biodegradation of the test item was measured by quantifying the CO2 produced by the respiratory activity of bacteria present in sludge. This was done by trapping produced CO2 in NaOH and quantifying the inorganic carbon content with an inorganic carbon analyzer. Following, biodegradation of the test item was calculated from the inorganic carbon quantified as percentage of the total carbon content present in the initial test item concentrations.
After 28 days, the 10%-level biodegradation -- defined as the start of biodegradation -- was not reached for either of the test item concentrations: i.e., the percentage biodegradation was 4% and 1% for 10 mg/L and 20 mg/L test item, respectively. The percentage biodegradation for the positive control was 66% within 7 days and thus fulfilled the guideline criteria. Concluding, the test item must be regarded to be not readily biodegradable under the given test condition of the modified Sturm test.
The validity criteria of the present study were fulfilled according to the OECD 301 B/CO2 evolution guideline and DIRECTIVE 84/449/EEC. The study was performed compliant with GLP.
