The flammability properties of the test material were investigated under GLP conditions and in accordance with the standardised guideline EU Method A.10. The study has been assigned a reliability score of 1 in line with the principles for assessing data quality as defined by Klimisch et al. (1997).
The test is designed to measure the rate at which combustion moves away from an ignition source, along a train of powder. Due to the sample being friable, it was lightly ground prior to testing.
The powder is filled into a mould and onto an impervious non-combustible plate of low thermal conductivity. The mould is removed and the ignition source (flame or hot wire above 1000 °C) is placed at one end of the powder train for 2 minutes or until the powder ignites. When the powder has burned a distance of 80 mm the rate of burning over the next 100 mm is measured. The test is repeated six times using a cool clean plate each time unless a positive result is obtained earlier.
From the preliminary screening test the sample was seen to briefly ignite; therefore no further testing is required. The test material melted with decomposition to a black liquid. The sample supported combustion but did not propagate along the train nor was combustion sustained after the removal of the ignition source.
Under the conditions of this study, the test material was found not to be readily combustible.
In accordance with Section 1 of Annex XI of Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006, it is considered justified to omit the studies for pyrophoric properties and flammability on contact with water on the grounds that testing does not appear scientifically necessary. Based on chemical structure and experience in use, pyrophoricity is not to be expected and upon interaction with water the substance is not liable to become spontaneously flammable or to give off flammable gases in dangerous quantities.
Justification for classification or non-classification
In accordance with the criteria for classification as defined in Annex I, Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008, the substance does not require classification with respect to flammability.
