- guideline study
- Qualifier:
- according to guideline
- Guideline:
- EU Method A.10 (Flammability (Solids))
- Version / remarks:
- Official Journal of the European Union no. L142, May 31, 2008
- Deviations:
- no
- Qualifier:
- according to guideline
- Guideline:

- Deviations:
- no
- GLP compliance:
- no
- Remarks:
- Internal management system
- Test procedure:
- burning time (test type not further specified)
- Remarks:
- or specified in description of method (migrated information)
- Burning time:
- 1 935 s
- Remarks on result:
- other: over 170 m, after 170 mm the burning stopped.
- Interpretation of results:
- non flammable
- Conclusions:
- a,a,a',a'-tetramethyl-m-xylene-a,a'-diol is non flammable.
- Executive summary:
The flammability of the test substance was determined according to EC Regulation No 440/2008, Guideline A.10 and according to UN Test N.1. The substance locally ignited and propagated combustion by burning with flame. But the burning rate was that low that the test substance is not considered as highly flammable according to EC Guideline A.10 and that it should not be classified as a flammable solid according to UN Test N.1.
- Endpoint:
- pyrophoric solids
- Data waiving:
- study scientifically not necessary / other information available
- Justification for data waiving:
- the study does not need to be conducted because the substance is known to be stable in contact with air at room temperature for prolonged periods of time (days) and hence, the classification procedure does not need to be applied
- Endpoint:
- flammability
- Data waiving:
- study scientifically not necessary / other information available
- Justification for data waiving:
- the study does not need to be conducted because the substance is completely molten at 160°C
- Endpoint:
- substances / mixtures which in contact with water emit flammable gases
- Data waiving:
- study scientifically not necessary / other information available
- Justification for data waiving:
- the study does not need to be conducted because the experience in production or handling shows that the substance does not react with water, e.g. the substance is manufactured with water or washed with water

In the screening test the gas flame was applied for 2 minutes to one end of the substance train. The substance ignited and propagated combustion by burning with flame. But the burning rate was very low and the substance stopped burning after 170 mm. The burning time over 170 mm was 32.25 minutes.
Description of key information
a,a,a',a'-tetramethyl-m-xylene-a,a'-diol is non flammable, not pyrophoric, not water reactive and not self-heating.
Key value for chemical safety assessment
- Flammability:
- non flammable
Additional information
The flammability of the test substance was determined according to EC Regulation No 440/2008, Guideline A.10 and according to UN Test N.1. The substance locally ignited and propagated combustion by burning with flame. But the burning rate was that low that the test substance is not considered as highly flammable according to EC Guideline A.10 and that it should not be classified as a flammable solid according to UN Test N.1.
This outcome is supported by 1999-85-5, Flammability, Han, Zhejiang Chemical Industry Research Institute, 2011, RS
The following endpoints are waived:
Self-heating: The substance is a solid with melting point below 160°C, therefore not self-heating.
.
Justification for classification or non-classification
a,a,a',a'-tetramethyl-m-xylene-a,a'-diol should not be classified as a flammable solid according to UN Test N.1.
