Description of key information
Appearance :
Pentyl formate is physically appear in colourless liquid form.
Melting point:
The Freezing point determination of Pentyl formate (CAS No.638-49 -3) was done using crushed ice and salt.(type of bath). No freezing was observed up to -11.52°C. Hence, the freezing point was inferred to be less than -11.52 °C at 969.1 hPa.
Boiling Point:
The boiling point determination of Test item Pentyl formate (CAS No. 638 -49 -3 ) was done as per the test guideline OECD 103. The method followed was according to Siwoloboff. The mean boiling point was found to be 129.6°C at 971.6 hPa.
Density:
The density of Test item Pentyl formate (CAS No. 638 -49 -3 ) was determined following OECD guideline 109 and according to the Indian standard method for determination of density of liquids [IS 4730:1994 (Reaffirmed 2010)]. The mean density of the test item was found to be 0.9290 g/cm³at 20 °C and 971.3 hPa.
Particle size distribution:
the study does not need to be conducted because the substance is marketed or used in a non solid or granular form (Pentyl formate is physically appear in colourless liquid form.)
Vapour pressure:
Vapour pressure of the pentyl formate is determined to be 1333 Pa & 202655 Pa at temperatures 33.13 Deg C & 146.11 Deg C respectively.
Partition coefficient:
The Log Pow value was determined to be 2.786 ± 0.000 dimensionless at 25°C.
This value indicates that the substance is hydrophilic in nature
.
Water solubility:
The solubility of (Pentyl formate of 638-49-3 )in water was determined to be 4570.01 mg/L at 25°C.
Pentyl formate is soluble in water.
Surface tension:
Surface tension of the pentyl formate is predicted to be 0.0270 N/m.
Flash point:
The flash point determination of Pentyl formate (CAS No. 638-49-3)was done following closed cup method using Abels flash point apparatus. The test was conducted in replicates and mean flash point was found to be 33°C at 972.7hPa.
With these study flash point of pentyl formate is determined from other reliable source is 26.66 Deg C and 25 Deg C.
Hence,on the basis of above flash point and initial boiling point value, the chemical pentyl formate was considered to be classified as flammable liquid category 3 in accordance with CLP regulation.
Auto flammability:
Auto flammability of the pentyl formate is determined to be 250 Deg C.
Flammability:
Pentyl formate does not indicate any ignition when the flame of bunsen burner having temperature of approximately 950°C is brought in contact with it. Thus it can be concluded that Pentyl formate is not flammable at high temperature. However since such high temperatures are not found under normal circumstances of transportation and use, thus Pentyl formate was considered non-flammable for chemical safety assessment. Hence,on the basis of above flash point is 33 Deg C and initial boiling point value, the chemical pentyl formate was considered to be classified as flammable liquid category 3 in accordance with CLP regulation.
Explosiveness:
the study does not need to be conducted because there are no chemical groups present in the molecule which are associated with explosive properties
Oxidizing properties:
the study does not need to be conducted because the organic substance contains oxygen or halogen atoms which are chemically bonded only to carbon or hydrogen and hence, the classification procedure does not need to be applied
pH :
The pH determination of test item Pentyl formate (CAS No 638-49-3) was done following OECD guideline 122. pH of 1% w/v solution was measured with the help of pH meter and it was observed to be 3.77at 27.9 °C.
Viscosity :
Kinematic viscosity (experimental) of Pentyl formate( CAS No. 638-49-3)at 20°C and 40°C is 12.4872mm²/secand 11.0880mm²/s, respectively.
Dynamic viscosity (calculated) of Pentyl formate( CAS No. 638-49-3)at 20°C and 40°C is 11.6006mPa.Sand 10.3007mPa.S, respectively.
Additional information
Appearance:
Pentyl formate is physically appear in colourless liquid form.
From the other supporting studies it is concluded that the pentyl formate is physically appear liquid having fruit like odor and its colour vary from colourless to pale yellow.
Melting point:
The Freezing point determination of Pentyl formate (CAS No.638-49-3) was done using crushed ice and salt.(type of bath). No freezing was observed up to -11.52°C. Hence, the freezing point was inferred to be less than -11.52 °C at 969.1 hPa.
