Description of key information

Tungsten dioxide was not tested for toxicity to soil organisms and read-across to sodium tungstate was used for these endpoints.

Experimental results are available for sodium tungstate toxicity to earthworm reproduction, seedling emergence and seedling growth, as well as for carbon and nitrogen transformation. In addition, several older studies on chicken species were identified in which the animals were fed varying amounts of sodium tungstate in their diets. However, the bird studies were deemed to be unreliable and were not further considered in the assessment.

The most sensitive species to sodium tungstate was found to be the terrestrial plant L. sativa with an 21-d NOEC for % emergence, shoot height and shoot weight of 37 mg Na2WO4/kg soil dw which corresponds to a value of 23,15 mg W/kg soil dw.
