Description of key information

The influence of 2-isobutyl-2-methyl-1,3-dioxolane-4-methanol on the respiration rate of activated sludge was investigated after a contact time of 3 hours in accordance with OECD 209 and GLP principles. The substance was not toxic to waste water bacteria (activated sludge) at or below a loading rate of 320 mg/l (NOEL nitrification).
For total, heterotrophic and nitrification inhibition the EL50 was beyond the range tested (>1000 mg/l).

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for microorganisms:
1 000 mg/L
EC10 or NOEC for microorganisms:
320 mg/L

Additional information

The substance was tested for toxicity on aerobic wastewater microorganisms of activated sludge in a study performed according to OECD Guideline 209 and in accordance with GLP.

The microorganisms were exposed during 3 hours to a geometric series of six treatment levels of 2-isobutyl-2-methyl-1,3-dioxolane-4-methanol: 3.2, 10, 32, 100, 320 and 1000 mg/l (nominal).

No statistically significant inhibition of the total respiration rate of the sludge was recorded at any of the concentrations tested. The substance was not toxic to waste water bacteria (activated sludge) at or below a loading rate of 320 mg/l (NOEL nitrification). For total, heterotrophic and nitrification inhibition the EL50 was beyond the range tested (>1000 mg/l).
