Description of key information

According to three reliable studies the substance cannot be considered as readily biodegradable but it is considered as inherently biodegradable by analogy with a similar substance.

Both OECD 301D and 310 tests were performed on 2-isobutyl-2-methyl-1,3-dioxane-4-methanol. In the GLP compliant OECD 301D study, the substance at 1 mg/L or 3 mg/L was degraded at 14% or 6% respectively based on O2 consumption after 28 days of exposure in an activated sludge sample (Desmares-Koopmans, 014). In the OECD 310 test (not compliant with GLP), the the biodegradation of 2-isobutyl-2-methyl-1,3-dioxane-4-methanol at an initial concentration of 20 mg/L was 1.9% after 28 days of incubation (Denadai, 2007). Validity criteria were fulfilled in both studies and the substance is considered as not readily biodegradable.

An OECD 302B study was performed on the analogous substance 2,2-dimethyl-1,3-dioxolan-4-ylmethanol in compliance with GLP (Matthews, 2014). A biodegradation of 25% was observed after 28 days while the reference substance was degraded at more than 70% after 14 days confirming the suitability of the inoculum. All validity criteria were fulfilled and the substance was considered as inherently biodegradable.
