Administration / exposure

Type of coverage:
occlusive
Vehicle:
water
Details on dermal exposure:
5 male and 5 female Sprague Dawley rats (Him:OFA) were hair-clipped and received 1 day later a dermal dose of 2000 mg formamidine sulfinic acid/kg body weight. Application was achieved by spreading the test substance over an area of approx. 5 x 6 cm and moistening with destilled water. The area was then covered by a cellulose patch for 24 hours.
Duration of exposure:
24 h
Doses:
2000 mg FAS/kg bw
No. of animals per sex per dose:
female: 5
male: 5

Results and discussion

Effect levels
Sex:
male/female
Dose descriptor:
LD50
Effect level:
> 2 000 mg/kg bw
Based on:
test mat.
Mortality:
not reported
Clinical signs:
other: The only adverse inlife- observation was chromodacryorrhea which occurred maximally 1 day after administration of the compound in all males and 4/5 females. This was attributed to reduced well-being caused by the dressing.
Gross pathology:
At necropsy no changes were observed that could unequivocally be attributed to the test compound.

Criteria used for interpretation of results: EU
Executive summary:

As result of the dermal toxicity tes in rats it is concluded that the LD50 (dermal) of formamidine sulfinic acid is beyond 2000mg/kg b.w.
