The registration substance is a complex mixture of constituents which are designed to be stable over a long period of use in engines.
The registration substance does not readily dissolve in water, therefore hydrolysis testing could not be conducted. EC No. 424-820-7 is a UVCB which contains constituents with hydrolysable moieties and without hydrolysable moieties. The former regard phosphonates that hydrolyse rapidly within a few minutes. Hydrolysis of constituents that lack of hydrolysable moieties are considered negligible under environmental conditions. The registration substance would not be expected to undergo phototransformation.
Based on the properties predicted for the constituents of the registration substance, it is expected that the registration substance as a whole and most of the constituents within it would partition to sediments or solids. The registration substance would not be expected to undergo any volatilisation. The registration substance is able to undergo biodegradation in aquatic conditions, and some abiotic degradation would also be anticipated, and while not making the readily biodegradable requirements it is considered not persistent.This conclusion was endorsed by the UK Competent Authority in 2008 within the forum of the ECB TCNES WG for PBT.
The screening criteria for Bioaccumulation potential were met as evidenced by estimated Log Kow values. Log Kow values ranging from -1.24 to 8.10 were estimated. Of the 11 constituents 8 have Log Kow values under the screening criteria of 4.5, therefore they are not considered further. 3 of the constituents have predicted LogKow values greater than 4.5, these therefore meet the screening criteria for Bioaccumulation. However, it is not possible to predict how the constituents would behave in vivo situations and the screening criteria assessment is not a reliable one for this sort of situation. No definitive conclusion for bioaccumulation potential can be reached at this time for the registration substance.
