No data are available for genetic toxicity.

BASF (1989) reported a bacterial reverse mutation assay (Ames test) with sodium sulphide (CAS: 1313-82-2). The Salmonella typhimurium strains TA 1535, TA 1537, TA 98 and TA 100 were used. The test concentrations were 4 - 5000 ug/plate with and without metabolic activation. A negative result was obtained.

Oliver and Marzin (1987) reported a SOS chromotest with ammonium sulfide (CAS: 12135 -76 -1). E. coli were used in this experiment. Test concentrations were 0.9 - 9 mM/ml with and without metabolic activation. No bacteriotoxic effect was found.


Endpoint Conclusion:

Justification for classification or non-classification

Since ammonium sulfide is corrosive and strongly alkaline, testing regarding in vitrocytotoxicity is not meaningful/necessary. No structural alert (hydrogen sulfide).

Since ammonium sulfide is corrosive and the sulfide ion as well as hyrogen sulfide are of high acute toxicity, in vivo testing is not meaningful/necessary. Furthermore, these compounds do not pose a structural alert.
