Short-term tests with species of three trophic levels (fish, daphnids, algae) are available for NBPT. All test were conducted according to current OECD, EU or EPA guidelines and under GLP-conditions.

Adverse effects on aquatic organisms were not observed for any of the tested species, all available LC50and EC50-values were far above 100 mg/L. For fish, tested on bluegill sunfish (Lepomis macrochirus), an LC50value of 1140 mg/L was reported after 96 h of exposure. The EC50(48 h) for daphnids, tested as representatives for invertebrates, was determined to be 290 mg/L. In the study conducted with the freshwater green algae Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata a 96 h EC50-value of 280 mg/L is reported. This value is the lowest available for aquatic species and thus is used for the PNEC-calculation of the test substance.

For microorganisms, a test with activated sludge showed no effects of the test substance. The determined EC10(3 h) was 880 mg/L (nominal) and the corresponding NOEC 10 mg/L (nominal).
