Description of key information

Two studies were conducted to assess the biodegradability of Oxooil LS13 in water:
1 - The first study was performed to assess the ready biodegradability of Oxooil LS 13 in an aerobic aqueous medium. Preliminary work showed that the test material was volatile and hence the conditions employed for a Modified CO2Evolution Test would not be suitable for the determination of the biodegradability of the test material. The CO2Headspace Test, which is recommended for volatile materials, was therefore used. The test material attained 3% degradation after 28 days and therefore cannot be considered to be readily biodegradable.
2 - The second study was performed to assess the inherent biodegradability of Oxooil LS 13 in an aerobic aqueous medium. The study was conducted according to OECD guideline 302D. The test material attained 41% degradation after 56 days and therefore cannot be considered to be inherently biodegradable. The present inherent biodegradation study is classified as reliable without restrictions according to the OECD guideline 302D.

Additional information

- Ready biodegradability:

A study was performed to assess the ready biodegradability of Oxooil LS 13 in an aerobic aqueous medium. Preliminary work showed that the test material was volatile and hence the conditions employed for a Modified CO2 Evolution Test would not be suitable for the determination of the biodegradability of the test material. The CO2 Headspace Test, which is recommended for volatile materials, was therefore used. The test material, at a concentration of 20 mg C/L, was exposed to activated sewage sludge micro-organisms with culture medium in sealed culture vessels in the dark at 20 ± 1.0°C for 28 days. The test material attained 3% degradation after 28 days and therefore cannot be considered to be readily biodegradable. The present biodegradation study is classified as reliable without restrictions according to the OECD guideline No. 310 despite the fact that no batch/lot number was provided for the test substance.

- Inherent biodegradability:

A study was performed to assess the inherent biodegradability of Oxooil LS 13 in an aerobic aqueous medium. The study was conducted according to OECD guideline 302D. The test material, at a concentration of 20.2 mg C/L, was exposed to activated sewage sludge micro-organisms with culture medium in sealed culture vessels in the dark at 18 - 24°C for 56 days. The test material attained 41% degradation after 56 days and therefore cannot be considered to be inherently biodegradable. The present inherent biodegradation study is classified as reliable without restrictions according to the OECD guideline No. 302D.
