Description of key information

The oxygen consumption was measured in a study with Pseudomonas putida according to a method developed at Hüls AG (Dr. Schöber1). The results of the test showed that the EC10 (6 h) was 45.2 μL/L (test 1) and 72.0 μL/L (test 2) with a mean value of 58.6 μL/L (49.6 mg/L). The EC50 (6 h) was 193 μL/L (test 1) and 294 μL/L (test 2) with a mean value of 243.5 μL/L (206 mg/L).
A respiration inhibition test was performed according to EC guideline 88/302/EC (30.5.1988) by Hüls Infracor GmbH. Activated sludge from a predominantly domestic sewage treatment plant was exposed to 5 different concentrations of Z-cyclooctene for 3 hours. Afterwards the respiration rate of each replicate was measured and compared to control replicates. In the tested concentration range of 847; 1271; 1694; 24541 and 3388 mg/L no inhibitory dose-effect level could be determined.

Additional information

While in the oxygen consumption test with Pseudomonas putida only one microorganism is examined, the test on respiration inhibition was performed with acitvated sludge from a sewage treatment plant. Thus the last test represents the situation in a sewage treatment plant more realistically. Furthermore a solvent was used in the test with Pseudomonas putida.
