Solutions of the test material at different concentrations were exposed under "clean" and "dirty" conditions for various times. At various intervals, samples were taken and submitted to chemical analysis in order to determine the decompositoin (dechlorination) of the substance. Dirty conditions simulated conditions under which disinfection is appliacalbe. They furthermore are equivalent to methods for efficacy testing.

Applicant's summary and conclusion

Conclusions:
A 90% dechlorination under realistic application conditions was verified in 0.01 and 0.1 g/L aqueous solutions within 0.5 and 14 hours, respectively. At an initial concentration of 0.01 g/L, the substance was not detectable after 5 hours of exposure to "dirty" conditions. Chloramin B in higher concentrations 1-50g/L however was rather stable even under dirty conditions.
Executive summary:

In a non-GLP study, aqueous solutions (application solutions) of the test material at concentrations 0.01, 0.1, 1, 10, 20 and 50 g/L were exposed to „clean“ and „dirty“ conditions. „Clean” conditions: 1 L of the Chloramin B application solution, 0,3 g Albumin (Adult Bovine Serum, Lot B01110-2358); “Dirty” conditions: 1 L of Chloramin B application solution, 3 g Albumin (Adult Bovine Serum, Lot B01110-2358), 3 ml sheep erythrocytes. The “dirty” conditions were meant to simulate situations, were disinfection measures are required. The “dirty” conditions are equivalent to the conditions for efficacy testing of disinfectants. Samples were taken at regular intervals (hours and days) in order to measure the decomposition/dechlorination of the test material. The following analytical methods were applied: A validatedHPLC Method for the concentration 0.01 and 0.1 g/L and a validated iodometric titration methodfor the concentrations1 – 50 g/L. The measurements showed that at an initial concentration of 0.01 g/L, the substance was not detectable after 5 hours of exposure to "dirty" conditions.

A 90% dechlorination under realistic "dirty" application conditions was verified in 0.01 and 0.1 g/L aqueous solutions within 0.5 and 14 hours, respectively. Dechlorination in clean solutions was longer, i.e. 90% of 0.01 g/L solution were dechlorinated within 95 hours and abolut 50% of 0.1 g/l solutoin within 71 hours. Chloramin B in higher concentrations 1 -50g/L however was rather stable even under “dirty” conditions. Taking into consideration that during its way to the STP Chloramine B is diluted with the other waste waters - highly contaminated with bacteria and organic materials - and that a worst case dilutions factor of 500 (50 g/L time 0.1 g/L) is very realistic, it can be concluded that no Chloramine B is reaching the STP but its dechlorinated form – benzenesulphonamide.
