Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Additional information

Testing for long-term toxicity to fish is not considered necessary because:

  • Data for the structurally analogous substance tetraethyl orthosilicate (CAS 78-10-4), which shares the same hydrolysis product as the registered substance, indicate that short-term toxicity to fish is low. Tetraethyl orthosilicate hydrolyses rapidly (half-life 4.4 h) to silicic acid and ethanol (CAS 64-17-5). The registered substance, tetramethyl orthosilicate, also hydrolyses rapidly (half-life <3 min at pH 4, 7 and 9 at approximately 20°C) but in this case to silicic acid and methanol (CAS 67-56-1).
  • The risk characterisation ratios (RCRs) based on PNECaqua(freshwater)derived from existing data for methanol are <1.
