Description of key information

Flash Point (tetramethyl orthosilicate): 26 - 31°C (DIN 51755, ASTM D 56)

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Flash point at 101 325 Pa:
26 °C

Additional information

Flash point values of 26°C (Evonik 2007) and 31°C (Birke 2000) were determined for tetramethyl orthosilicate with the use of closed cup method. The results are considered reliable and used as a weight of evidence. Also, a limit value of <79°C was determined for the substance using an open cup method (Birke 2000). Flash point values of 20°C, 28°C and 45°C were reported for the substance in secondary sources to which no reliability could be assigned. Differences in flash point values could be as a result of varying purities for individual commercial samples tested, and the method used.

A flash point of 26 - 31°C, with a boiling point of 121 - 122°C, indicates that the substance should be classified as a flammable liquid according to the criteria of EC Regulation 1272/2008.
