Description of key information

'Yellow disazo condensation pigments' are with high probability acutely not harmful to fish. No toxic effects occur at the range of the substances solubility. EC50 (96h) > 100 mg/L (nominal) for Poecilia reticulata (OECD 203, EU Method C.1)

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

The acute toxicity on fish was investigated for two ‘yellow disazo condensation pigments’ (CAS 68516-73-4 and CAS 5580-57-4) with guppy Poecilia reticulate as test species (CETA, 2011; CETA, 2001). Based on the low water solubility of the test item, saturated stock solutions were prepared and the tests were conducted as limit tests with a nominal concentration of 100 mg/L. For one study (CAS 68516-73-4), which was conducted under GLP conditions according to OECD guideline 203, the stock solution was filtered through 0.45 µm filter (CETA, 2011). In the other non-GLP study according to EU Method C.1 (CAS 5580-57-4), the stock solution was used without filtration (CETA, 2001). Hence, non-dissolved material was observed in the test vessels, which disturbed the measurement of the oxygen content in the test solution. However, in both studies the LC50 values after 96 hours of exposure are above the 100 mg/L test item concentration.
