- Details on preparation and application of test substrate:
- The test solution of meta-Diisopropanolbenzene was prepared by directly adding appropriate amount of the test item into distilled water. Ultrasonication for 30 min was used to facilitate the dispersion of the test substance.
Fresh test solutions were added to glass bottles that have been filled with 200g clean quartz sand. - Species:

- Details on test conditions:
- TEST SYSTEM
- Test container (type, material, size): Glass bottles (Diameter=200 mm) with a hole in the lid
- Amount of soil: 200 g quartz sand
- Method of seeding: The seed was positioned on the substrate allowing adequate room for anticipated growth. The radicle end of the seed was aligned in the direction of this growth. Bottle lids were then used to hold the seed in place.

- Details on results:
- remark from reviewer: The percentage germination of sesame seed at 1000 mg/L is not reported correctly. This is corrected in the tables given below.
- Reported statistics and error estimates:
- The mean root length for each concentration were compared with the control mean using an multiple comparison method of Dunnett’s tests (ANOVA SPSS 17.0).
- Validity criteria fulfilled:
- yes
- Conclusions:
- The study was performed under Chinese GLP. This study result, with some restrictions, can be used for risk assessment and classification and labelling.
- Executive summary:
Under valid conditions, the phytotoxicity of the test substance (meta-Diisopropanolbenzene) on seed of commercially important terrestrial plants was conducted according to the following guidelines: “The guidelines for the testing of chemicals” (HJ/T 153-2004); Ecological Effects Test Guidelines, OPPTS 850.4200, Seed Germination/Root Elongation Toxicity Test. EPA 712-C-96-154, April 1996 etc.
In the test, ten plant species of Lycopersicon esculentum (tomato), Cucumis sativus (cucumber), Lactuca sativa (lettuce), etc. were exposed to a series of concentrations of the test substance. A blank control without the test substance was run at the same time. During the whole test period, the pH values of the freshly prepared control and Test Media were between 6.8 and 7.4, and the temperature in the germination facility was maintained in the range of 24oC to 25oC. At the end of the test, more than 65 percent of the control seeds germinated and the roots developed were longer than. So the study met the acceptability criteria prescribed by the protocol. Therefore the test was considered valid.
The results showed that under valid test conditions, the LOEC and the NOEC are greater than 1000 mg/L (nominal concentration). The EC50 for either germination or root elongation is greater than 1000 mg/L (nominal concentration).
