Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Relevant exposure of soil is unlikely regarding the use of slags, tin-smelting. Use of this substance only takes place at a limited number of industrial sites and due to company´s implemented risk management measures very low releases of slags, tin-smelting to the environment in general, and to soil in particular occur. As already explained in IUCLID endpoint 6.1.7 "Toxicity to microorganisms", slags, tin-smelting poses no risk for activated sludges, since the inherent properties of the substance, notably the water insolubility, will result in removing of it in the primary settling tank or fat trap of full scale installations. Consequently, discharging of sewage sludge on soil will not lead to any exposure of slags, tin-smelting via this pathway.
Even in case of an uptake of all detected metals by organisms (as a worst case scenario) adverse effects can be excluded due to the physico-chemical properties (in particular the highly insolubility in water).
Against this background performing of tests to assess toxicity to terrestrial plants does not need to be conducted under Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 (REACH).
