Description of key information

The adsorption potential to soil or sediment is low. The mean of the calculated logKoc-values is: logKoc = 1.35.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Koc at 20 °C:
22.4

Additional information

According to the Annexes VIII and IX of REACH "The study does not need to be conducted if:

based on the physicochemical properties the substance can be expected to have a low potential for adsorption (e.g. the substance has a low octanol-water partition coefficient); ...".

The partition coefficients of melam is low, i.e. log Pow <-0.9, see Chapter 4.7. A relevant adsorption of melam to soil is therefore not expected and a waiving of the study is justified.

3 results are available from calculation methods. The mean of the 3 available log Koc was calculated according to the ECHA Guidance Documents on Info Requirements, R.7.1.15.3 to logKoc = 1.35, corresponding to Koc = 22.4.

The adsorption potential to soil or sediment is therefore low.

A further study with three soil types was disregarded because the reported and used spiking solution of 5 g melam/L methanol is not feasible, as the solubility of melam in methanol is 0.17 mg/L at 23 °C.
