Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

PBT assessment: overall result

PBT status:
the substance is not PBT / vPvB
Justification:

γ-decalactone is readily biodegradable and has a log octanol-water partition coefficient at 3.0, therefore does not meet the criterion for persistence (P) and bioaccumulation (B). For the T criterion, the most sensitive species in acute conditions is aquatic invertebrates with an estimated EC50 value greater than 0.1 mg/L (at 13.1 mg/L). In addition, two chronic EC10 values were determined for the read-across substance, γ-undecalactone (considered more toxic than γ-decalactone), on aquatic invertebrates and algae. Based on data available, the EC10 for algal growth rate is 11.2 mg/L. The lowest EC10 value based on a read-across substance, undecalactone, which is expected to be more toxic than decalactone, was determined at 1.02 mg/L for chronic daphnid reprotoxicity. In conclusion, as these values are both greater than 0.01 mg/L and the substance is not classified as Carcinogenic (category 1 or 2), mutagenic (category 1 or 2), or toxic for reproduction (category 1, 2 or 3) and there is no other evidence of chronic toxicity, γ-decalactone does not meet the criterion for toxicity (T).

In conclusion, γ-decalactone is not considered PBT or vPvB.
