Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Justifications and discussions

Category definition:
HOPA olefins are acyclic hydrocarbon molecules having six to more than 30 carbons with a double bond between two of the carbons. Alpha olefins are molecules with a double bond at the end of the chain, the alpha position, while internal olefins have the double bond within the chain.
Category description:
Increasing Carbon Chain Length
Category rationale:
The category members are all members of the same hydrocarbon class, that is, they are all predominantly high carbon number olefins. The difference between category members is the length of the hydrocarbon chain or the carbon number range and the position of the olefinic bond. With respect to environmental effects, these hydrocarbon streams will all act via non-polar narcosis. The low water solubility of the higher carbon number members is expected to limit the aquatic toxicity. The mammalian toxicity data available on the category members suggests that the linear alpha olefins are relatively non-hazardous, with dermal irritation upon prolonged and repeated contact and pulmonary aspiration reflecting the principle concerns.
