Description of key information

Substances identified as C10-13 hydrocarbons, C11-14 hydrocarbons, C12-16 hydrocarbons, and C14-18 hydrocarbons, each containing n-alkanes, isoalkanes, and cyclics, with <2% aromatics in the C9 to C14 and C14 to C20 Aliphatics Category (</=2% aromatics) are expected to demonstrate toxicity to sediment invertebrates based on results of studies with a marine water sediment invertebrate, Corophium volutator. These substances have been shown to demonstrate a range of effects, as measured by immobility in 10-day EL50 studies. The 10-day EL50 values ranged from 340 to 770 mg/kg/sediment (dw).

Short-term studies:

Corophium volutator was exposed to sediment spiked with “Hydrocarbons, C10 -C13, C11 -C14, C12 -C16 and C14-C18, containing n-alkanes, isoalkanes, cyclics, <2% aromatics" for 10 days. The geometric mean of LC50 is 502.75 mg/kg sediment (dw).

No data is available for long-term sediment toxicity.

Substance is a hydrocarbon UVCB. Standard tests for this endpoint are intended for single substances and are not appropriate for this complex substance. However, this endpoint is characterized for representative hydrocarbon structures that comprise the hydrocarbon blocks used to assess the environmental risk of this substance with the PETRORISK model (see library tab in PETRORISK spreadsheet attached in section 13).
