Inorganic mercury is part of the global "Mercury cycle". Due to the physico-chemical characteristics of Hg and biological conversion of inorganic mercury to methylmercury, the assessment of environmental fate is highly complex. An excellent overview on the environmental fate and pathways of mercury is given in: U.S. EPA (1997). Mercury, Study Report to Congress, Volume III: Fate and Transport of Mercury in the Environment, EPA-452/R-97-005.
