Justification for classification or non-classification

An 88% aqueous solution of lactic acid is highly irritating to eyes. It is also irritating to rabbit skin; however, it is not irritating at all to guinea pig skin or porcine skin. In an in vitro test it was shown that lactic acid 88% was toxic to a skin cell patch of rabbit skin cells, but not human skin cells. Therefore, it can be stated that rabbit skin is more sensitive to lactic acid irritation than other skin types, including human skin. Hence, rabbit skin is not a 1:1 model for determining the skin irritation potential of lactic acid. Lactic acid is not irritating to porcine skin, guinea pig skin, and human skin cell cultures. It is currently labeled as irritant based on the results with rabbit skin only.
