Description of key information

According to REACH Annex X, point 9.5.1, long-term toxicity testing for sediment organisms shall be proposed if the chemical safety assessment according to Annex I indicates the need to investigate further the effects on sediment organisms. However, lactic acid is practically non-toxic to aquatic organisms. Corrected for the pH effect, no hazard was identified for lactic acid/lactate. This can be safely extrapolated to the sediment compartment. Therefore, based on the chemical safety assessment according to Annex I, testing of long-term toxicity to sediment organisms is not required.
