Biodegradation screening studies are available for a number of substances in the polyalphaolefin (PAO) category and all have found the test substance not to be readily biodegradable. Based on read across from this data, Alkane 6 is also considered not to be readily biodegradable.

Alkane 4 (a structural analogue) attained 19% degradation after 28 days and therefore cannot be considered to be readily biodegradable under the strict terms and conditions of OECD Guidelines No 301B.

However, a wide range in results has been reported from these ready biodegradation screening studies. The reported biodegradation ranges from 0 -88% over 28 days. There is no clear trend in the biodegradability results with increasing carbon number. Two of the studies (Douglas and Sewell, 1989 and McGoldrick and Mehta, 1992) only narrowly miss the criteria to be considered readily biodegradable. Taken together these studies indicate that although not readily biodegradable these substances can be expected to biodegrade in the environment. Results from inherent biodegradability studies are not available for category members. However, based on the results from the ready biodegradation screening studies these substances are expected to be inherently biodegradable.
