Description of key information

EEA-NH4 is considered hydrolitically stable.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

A preliminary test (Tier 1) was performed for determination of the abiotic degradation of the EEA ion (perfluoro-3,6 -dioxaoctanoate) of the test substance EEA-NH4 (perfluoro-3,6 -dioxaoctanoic acid ammonium salt) in aqueous solutions. The GLP-compliant study was conducted according to OECD guideline 111 (TNO Quality of Life, 2008a).

The test was carried out at 50 +/- 0.5 °C at three pH values (4.0, 7.0 and 9.0). The concentration of the test substance was determined at t = 0 and at t = 5 days and the percentage hydrolysis of the test substance after five days was calculated. All test substance solutions (in buffer) were analyzed with high performance liquid chromatography/ tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) The HPLC-MS with Electrospray Ionization (ESI) as ionization method was used in the negative mode and only the negatively charged EEA ion of EEA-NH4 was determined. Since in all buffer solutions (pH 4.0, 7.0 and 9.0) less than 10% of EEA degradation was observed after 5 days at 50 °C, the EEA ion of EEA-NH4 was considered hydrolytically stable at pH 4.0, pH 7.0 and pH 9.0.
