Description of key information

The test item is a reddish-brown to brownish-grey powder that has no melting point up to the temperature of 500 °C at atmospheric pressure (1000 hPa). The relative density was determined to 3.627. The test item could not be ignited applying a flame as ignition source for at least 2 minutes and 5 minutes, respectively and is therefore not classified as flammable solid according to GHS. Furthermore, the pure test item indicated no self-ignition at atmospheric pressure up to the test end temperature of approx. 410 °C. The median particle size D50 was determined to 3.01 µm.

The water solubility of the substance "Neutralisation and reduction products of bauxite residue from refinement process" was tested according to the T/D protocol (OECD 29). Aluminium is the major constituent which is released and hence is relevant for risk/hazard assessment. The max. release of Al of 481 µg/L was noted after 28 days at pH 8 (100 mg/L loading, after 3kDa filtration).
