Key result
Test series:
UN Test series 2
Method:
UN Test 2 (a): UN gap test
Parameter:
fragmented length (cm)
Value:
0
Result:
negative, not sensitive to detonative shock
Remarks:
negative, no propagation of detonation ; (n=2 tubes) ; one tube was cracked but not completely fragmented ; result considered too insensitive to propagate detonation
Key result
Test series:
UN Test series 2
Method:
UN Test 2 (b): Koenen test
Parameter:
limiting diameter (mm)
Value:
1
Result:
negative, no violent effect on heating under confinement
Remarks:
(n=3 tubes) ; Fragmentation type: 'O': Tube unchanged ; Limiting diameter: < 1 mm
Test series:
UN Test series 2
Method:
UN Test 2 (c) (i): Time/pressure test
Parameter:
other: time for a pressure rise (ms)
Result:
negative, no or slow deflagration
Remarks:
time for a pressure rise from 690 to 2070 kPa : could not be determined (ms)
Remarks on result:
p < 2070 kPa

UN Gap test

UN 2 (a)

Negative

The tube remained intact during test one ; in test two the tube was observed to be cracked but not completely fragmented. No holes were punched through the witness plate.

Result: Negative ; too insensitive to propagate detonation

Koenen Tube test

UN 2 (b)

Negative

The sample has been shown to have a limiting diameter of < 1 mm (negative)

Type: ‘O’

Tube unchanged

A jet flame was observed during the measurement

Result: Negative ; no violent effect on heating under confinement

Time / Pressure test

UN 2 (c)(i)

Negative

The shortest time for a pressure rise from 690 to 2070 kPa was considered to be – ms

i.e. no pressure rise > 2070 kPa was reached

Result: Negative ; no or slow deflagration

Interpretation of results:
GHS criteria not met
Remarks:
EU & GHS criteria utilised in assessment
Conclusions:
Test Item: EU Criteria and/or UN GHS Transport Classification : does not meet GHS Criteria for Transport of Dangerous Goods - Explosive Class 1
Executive summary:

The potential explosivity of the test item was assessed in accordance with the UN Transport of Dangerous Goods: Manual of Tests and Criteria (2015) using Test Series 2. The selection of testing was made by expert judgement and in accordance of the results observed in preceding tests. The test item was negative in the UN Test Series 2(a) UN Gap Test for sensitivity to propagate detonation, negative in UN Test 2 (b) Koenen tube test: for heating under confinement, and negative in UN Test 2 (c)(i)Time / Pressure test for sensitivity to yield rapid explosive deflagration. All test results were negative, and on this basis, no further testing was therefore conducted. The substance exits consideration for acceptance into UN Class 1, as the substance is deemed too insensitive for classification and labelling. Other tests were omitted based on the results of previous tests and/or expert judgement in line with the UN MTC (2015).

Description of key information

Explosiveness: non-explosive; based on negative results in the following: Gap test : UN Test 2 (a), Koenen tube test : UN Test 2 (b), Time / pressure test: UN Test 2 (c)(i), UN MTC (2015), 2020

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Explosiveness:
non explosive
