Endpoint:
flash point of flammable liquids
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
Jan. - Feb. 2020

Type of method:
non-equilibrium method closed cup
Flash point apparatus:
Pensky-Martens apparatus
Flash point:
> 170 °C
Atm. press.:
101 325 Pa
Remarks on result:
other: results were automatically corrected to 101325 Pa, no flashpoint was found up to decomposition, starting as of 140 °C

Safety Test Results - All observations recorded were as follows:

Condensate was visible starting as of 57 °C; Formation of bubbles with a large distance was visible, the colour became slight lilac and getting darker as of 146 °C; the heating plate was turned off at 170 °C. The test item remained as a violet liquid after cooling down and decomposition was considered.

Determination of the Flash Point - The results of the determinations were as follows.

Search Program: Setting temperature to 170 °C resulted in no flash point being detected while the test item produced a strong violet fume.

A second run with Search program set to 150 °C was initiated, but no flash point was detected, while fume was observed as of 140 °C.

EVALUATION AND RESULT AND DISCUSSION

No flash point was found in the first pre-test up to 170 °C.

For safety reasons a second pre-test was performed up to 150 °C (as the test item produced a strong violet fume up to 170 °C), and also no flash point was found. Therefore, no flash point can be stated for 1,3-Diiodopropane up to 170 °C. No observations were made which might cause doubts on the validity of the study out-come. Therefore, the result of the study is considered valid.

Interpretation of results:
GHS criteria not met
Conclusions:
No flash point was detected when investigated up to 170 °C; as of 140 °C decomposition started, producing violet fume (iodine?). Therefore, no flash point can be stated for 1,3-diiodopropane up to 170 °C.
Executive summary:

First, a safety test was performed with approx. 3 mL of the test item that was heated with a heating plate up to 170 °C. After cooling down the test item stayed as a violet liquid (decomposition was considered). Then, a pre-test was performed using a flashpoint tester. In the pre-test, no flash point was detected. Heating was performed up to 170 °C in the first pre-test. Furthermore, the test item produced strong violet fume and the experiment was stopped. For safety reason a second pre-test was conducted up to 150 °C (as the test item produced strong violet fume up to 170 °C), fume was observed since starting at 140 °C. Also, no flash point was detected. Therefore, no flash point can be stated for 1,3-Diiodopropane up to 170 °C.

Description of key information

No flash point was detected when investigated up to 170 °C; as of 140 °C decomposition started, producing violet fume (iodine?). Therefore, no flash point can be stated for 1,3-diiodopropane up to 170 °C.
