The chronic toxicity of technical glufosinate-ammonium (Hoe 039866, purity 96%) was tested on Daphnia magna over 21 days in a semi-static test in accordance with US EPA-660/3-75-009 and principles given in draft Standard Evaluation Procedure for Daphnia life-cycle tests (EPA, 1986) (Fischer, 1987b). The nominal concentrations were 10, 18, 32, 56 and 100 mg/L plus control. The test temperature was 20 °C, pH 6.8 - 7.8. Three times a week the daphnids were fed (algal feeding suspension) and transferred into freshly prepared test solution. Observations were made on survival, growth and reproduction.

Measured concentrations of the test substance were 89 – 102% of the nominal values. At the three highest test concentrations, 100, 56 and 32 mg/L, 6.8%, 2.7% and 4.5% mortality of adults was observed, respectively. No mortality of adults was observed in the control or in the 10 and 18 mg/L levels. Reproduction (total number of young in first generation) was inhibited with 48% at 56 and with 60% at 100 mg/L. At 32 mg/L inhibition was 10% but concluded not statistically significant different from the control group. The 21 days NOEC could be determined to 18 mg/L based on mortality, 32 mg/L based on significant reproduction effects.

The LOEC based on adverse and statistically significant effects were not seen until at 56 mg/L.
