First-aid measures

Emergency measure - Inhalation: Not applicable.
Emergency measure - Eyes: Flush eyes immediately with water for several minutes. Seek
immediate medical attention.
Emergency measure - Skin: Wash skin immediately with soap and water. If irritation
persists, seek medical attention.
Emergency measure - Ingestion: Do not induce vomiting. Give victim plenty of water to
drink, and seek immediate medical attention.

Fire-fighting measures

Recommended extinguishing agent: Foam, dry chemical and CO2. Do not use water.

Product arising from burning: The substance is combustible and will burn if involved in
afire, evolving noxious fumes (eg carbon oxides).

Wear appropriate personal protective equipment conforming to
the relevant national or international standards, as
mentioned in section 2.3.10.


Absorb spillages of solutions with a suitable inert material
(eg. sand or soil). Carefully transfer the spillage to waste
containers, or use a sealed

industrial vacuum machine. Containers filled with waste
material must be labelled in the same way as the original
substance containers.


Clean the spillage area with copious amounts of water. Avoid
washing the solutions to the drain.


Dispose of waste material in accordance with local
regulations by incineration or landfill.

Handling and storage

Handling: No special engineering controls. Avoid skin and eye contact.
Use protective gloves( to standard EN 374) and goggles (to
standard EN 166). Access to eye wash facilities is assumed.

Storage: The product is stored (in concentrated form) in a tank at 15
to 25øC. In the diluted form, 5%, the product is stored in
an open tank at < 20øC.

Packaging of the substance and or preparation: Steel drums with plastic (polyethylene) lining or
polyethylene jerricans can be used.


The product is normally delivered in bulk.

Chemical reaction with water: The substance hydrolyses in water to form maleic acid. Above
pH 6 to 7, the substance is stable.

Industry - Possibility of neutralisation: None known

Industry - Possibility of destruction: controlled discharge: Contaminated containers or spillages of solutions mixed with
inert material (eg. sand or soil) may be disposed of by
landfill at an authorised tip in accordance with local
regulations.

Industry - Possibility of destruction - incineration: The substance can be disposed of by incineration by burning
under controlled conditions at a licensed waste treatment
processor in accordance with local regulations. Stack gases
should be scrubbed, because noxious fumes (eg. carbon
oxides) could be formed.

This method of disposal is preferred to landfill.

Industry - Possibility of destruction - water purification: The substance should not normally be discharged directly to
the sewage system or the aqueous environment. However,
adverse effects on sewage treatment systems would be
unlikely.
