Comments

Following the screening test, a run (Run 1) was carried out with the ramp rate set to 1°C/min with a starting temperature of 20°C and final temperature of 130°C.

This test failed due to crucible failure.

Run 2 was then performed with the ramp rate set to 1°C/min with a starting temperature of -50°C and final temperature of 130°C. After completion of testing it was noted that the endotherm at approximately 90°C observed in the screening run was not present in Run 2.

The same conditions as Run 2 were repeated for Run 3. A small exotherm occurred at approximately 70°C.

A sample of the test item was then placed in an oven at 100°C. It was observed that the sample became a mobile viscous liquid at this temperature. i.e. the sample had melted below 100°C. As no endothermic peak was observed during the analysis it was concluded that the sample undergoes a glass transition. It was observed that a thermal event at approximately 0 to 10°C was observed in the screening test as well as Runs 2 and 3.

A portion of the test item was heated past the suspected glass transition point, cooled to below the glass transition and heated again past the suspected glass transition point. The aim of the experiment was to confirm whether the event occurring at 0 -10°C was glass transition by observing the corresponding changes in the heat capacity as the sample cooled down past the glass transition. As the event was observed on all three scans, the event was confirmed as glass transition.

Based on the results of the screening test and Run 4 the value of the glass transition has been determined based on the mid-point analysis (Tm) as 8.95°C and 9.12°C respectively with a ramp rate of 20°C/min.

Conclusions:
The mean glass transition temperature for 4,4'-Isopropylidenediphenol, reaction products with 1-chloro-2,3-epoxypropane, mono, di and triesters with acrylic acid was determined to be 9.04°C.
Executive summary:

Melting point testing was performed on 4,4'-Isopropylidenediphenol, reaction products with 1-chloro-2,3-epoxypropane, mono, di and triesters with acrylic acid in accordance with the EU Method A.1. The exact melting point was unable to be determined. However the glass transition was determined to be 9.04°C.
