Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Safety pre-test 1

Heating on a magnesia groove: When heated on a magnesia groove over a Bunsen burner, the test item melted and burned up without a residue.

Beaten with a hammer: When the test item was beaten with a hammer on the anvil, it solidified and looks unchanged.

Safety pre-test 2

After reaching a temperature of 520 °C and cooling down the weight of the crucible was recorded with 627.30 mg, the gold sealing of the crucible was red and bulged outwards. Then the crucible was opened, the test item was black.

Calibration: The measurement of indium after calibration met the validity criteria.

DSC Screening of the Test ITem: An endothermal event was observed at 102.23 °C (onset), evuivalent to 49.41 J/g.

Conclusions:
A screening test of the thermal stability of Pentaerythritol tetrabenzoate via DSC (differential scanning calorimetry) was conducted from 0°C to 520 °C. During the DSC run no exothermal, only an endothermal (onset 102.23°C) event was detected. Therefore, the test item is no subject to the classification procedures for self-reactive substances and the acceptance procedures for Class 1 explosives need not to be applied.
Executive summary:

A screening test of the thermal stability of Pentaerythritol tetrabenzoate via DSC (differential scanning calorimetry) following OECD 113 was conducted from 0°C to 520 °C. During the DSC run no exothermal, only an endothermal (onset 102.23°C) event was detected.

Therefore, the test item is no subject to the classification procedures for self-reactive substances and the acceptance procedures for Class 1 explosives need not to be applied according to the UN Handbook “Recommendations on the transport of dangerous goods; Manual of tests and criteria” (sixth revised edition, UN, 2015, Section 20.2.1, 20.3.3.3 and Appendix 6).

Description of key information

A screening test of the thermal stability of Pentaerythritol tetrabenzoate via DSC (differential scanning calorimetry) following OECD 113 was conducted from 0°C to 520°C. During the DSC run no exothermal, only an endothermal (onset 102.23°C) event was detected.

Additional information

Justification for classification or non-classification

During the DSC run no exothermal, only an endothermal (onset 102.23°C) event was detected.

Therefore, the test item is no subject to the classification procedures for self-reactive substances and the acceptance procedures for Class 1 explosives need not to be applied according to the UN Handbook “Recommendations on the transport of dangerous goods; Manual of tests and criteria” (sixth revised edition, UN, 2015, Section 20.2.1, 20.3.3.3 and Appendix 6).
