The test substance underwent thermal decomposition before the boiling point could be reached

Results using Boiling Point Apparatus

Using the measured atmospheric pressure, 98.3 kPa, the temperature correction factors given in the OECD TG 103, the Sidney-Young number-value-equation, and the boiling point of toluene at standard pressure, it was possible to calculate the corrected boiling point, 109.5 °C, of toluene at the measured atmospheric pressure. The experimentally determined boiling points of toluene, 109.7 °C and 109.8 °C, agreed well with this calculated, corrected value.

These observations strongly suggested that test substance underwent thermal decomposition before reaching the boiling point could be reached. In order to investigate this, further experiments were performed using Differential Scanning Calorimetry.


Results using Differential Scanning Calorimetry

It was found that for both determinations with heating rates of 10.0 °C/min and 2.5 °C/min decomposition began immediately after the test substance had melted: i.e. at temperatures of about 147.0 °C or 143.0 °C respectively.

Test substance starts to thermally decompose at around 147.0 °C, i.e. before the boiling point is reached.
Executive summary:

To determine the boiling temperature of the test item a study was performed according to OECD TG 103 in compliance with GLP. Due to thermal decomposition of the test substance at a temperature lower than that of the boiling point, it was not possible to determine the boiling point at normal pressure. Using differential scanning calorimetry it could be determined that thermal decomposition starts at about 147.0 °C (i.e. before the boiling point was reached).
